I received this from our friend Manny Estrada in the Philippines a while ago, I just never got around to posting it as its been quite busy the past several weeks.
So yes, the country, where the highest proportion of internet users have become active users of social networking sites, is not what you'd expect. Its not the USA or Canada by a long mile. Not the "usual suspects" like South Korea or Japan - the world's highest broadband penetration countries yes and very advanced also in social networking migration, but not the world leaders. Scandinavia perhaps, Sweden or Finland or Norway, Denmark? No. Universal McCann does an annual survey of internet users, which covered 17,000 users in 29 countries. And the top country.. the Philippines !
Amazing numbers. 83% of Filipino internet users have created a social networking profile of themselves (vs 80% in South Korea). The top site they prefer in the Philippines is Friendster. And 90% of the users in the Philippines read blogs, second only to the South Koreas (92%). Even more amazing, 98% of Filipino internet users have watched a video on YouTube. For contrast, only 43% of US internet users access social networking sites, according to the same global study. There is a long article about the stats - understandibly focusing on the Philippines dimension, at the Philippines based Inquirer.net site. Thank you Manny for the story! Sorry it took me this long to post about it.
to be a pendant, here's a minor typo alert:
"Philippino" should be
"Filipino"

Great and almost surprising stats Tomi. And what are the rates of mobile social networking, because as we know (and as you already mentioned in your book with Alan Moore) Fillipines are among those who use mobile phones very regulary and widely. You have any idea of the impact of mobiles on social networking? OK, keep up the good work. Greetings from Slovenia.
